Responsibilities of a Scaled Bloodline reflects on the inherited weight of legacy within African families, where cultural expectations shape behavior and identity across generations. Parenting, often influenced by historical success stories within the family, becomes a blueprint—one that reinforces familiar patterns while discouraging deviation. Success is celebrated and replicated, while failure becomes a cautionary tale, shaping the moral compass and aspirations of the next generation. This work questions the rigidity of these cultural constructs: Are we raising individuals or preserving traditions? Are these inherited responsibilities still relevant, or do they limit the evolution of the self? By confronting these expectations, the piece invites reflection on how we define success, nurture identity, and honor heritage without becoming bound by it.
