The Night in Distance reflects on the quiet weight of history—nights filled with silence, yet echoing with the unresolved epistles of slavery. Through this work, I explore the tension between what was told and what truly happened, illuminating the gap between narrative and reality. The lantern becomes a symbol of inquiry, casting light on stories shaped by ancestral hands—stories that may have been distorted, concealed, or softened to preserve dignity or cope with pain. This piece challenges viewers to question: Are these retellings tools of empowerment for a rising civilization, or subtle reinforcements of a psychological bondage we’ve yet to break? it invites a reflection on the past, not as a fixed truth, but as a complex, contested space—where memory, silence, and misrepresentation collide.
